Tomorrow is Healthy Eating Day. In celebration of this the children can bring in healthy snacks for themselves and for their class, if they so wish. They can also wear clothes that reflect the colour of the healthy food e.g. red for tomatoes.

We will be learning our doubles next week in class, so if you would like to practice with them at home, here is a useful aid.
The children are developing their reading skills all of the time and they quickly becoming fluent readers. However it is necessary to develop their comprehensions skills. They need to understand what they have read. Please find below samples of questions you may ask them as you read together.
Homework Week 5
Tuesday 23rd September
We are approaching the end of our first Unit of Inquiry (UOI). The children have been discussing the different communities they have been members of, for example family, class, school and the outer community of Abu Dhabi. We have talked about the other members of these communities and the different responsibilities each person has in the community. The children have also been asked to think of their own responsibilities within these communities.
Last nights homework asked the children to think of Mr. John and what his responsibilities are in the school community. This evening, the children are asked to think about the attitude of integrity (being honest to yourself and others). They should think of a way in which they demonstrated this attitude in school or/and at home.
We will be making a 3d model of the local community next week, so give the children any spare shoe boxes or cereal boxes to bring into school.
Homework Sheet Week 4
Monday 8th
In class today we were talking about the months of the year and how many days are in each month. It would be great if you could chat to your child about the month in which they were born. We also discussed the number of days in each month.
They will hear the following rhyme regularly over the next few weeks.
Thirty days have September,
April, June, and November.
All the rest have 31,
Except February alone,
And that has 28 days clear,
And 29 in a leap year.
It is important the children read and go over their spellings every night.
Wednesday 10th/ September/ 2014
In school today we were talking about the different members in our community. We made a list, which consisted of the police, doctors, nurses, dentists and builders to name but a few. The children are learning that people contribute to the community in different ways.
In Math we talked about clocks and the children were learning about quarter past and how to recognize it. We also did loads of counting in 2s and 5s.
In English we continued to practice reading to self to build up our stamina so that the children will be able to read to themselves for long periods of time. We are at 5 minutes now. The children also learned that they need to pick books that they are interested in but also that they are able to read. They shouldn't be too easy or too hard.
We continue to do recount writing. It would be great if the children could bring in a photo tomorrow of an occasion or celebration they remember and would like to talk and write about in class.
Spellings and basic math test tomorrow.

Reading
The children
received their reading folders today. In these folders there is a book and a reading log. The children are required to read every evening with an adult for 20 minutes. The adult should then complete the reading log for that day.
Tips for reading with your child:
1. Talk to your child about the pictures. What is happening in the picture? What do you think this story is going to be about?
2. What did that boy/girl do? Why did s/he do that?/ Why do you think s/he did that?
3. Does that remind you of an event that has happened in your life? Does that book remind you of another story you have read?
Math
In Math we have
been discussing American currency and adding dollars. We looked at
the number square today and found patterns.
Each child received a
card today with their usernames and password. This allows them access to
the Everyday Math website https://www.everydaymathonline.com. They will be able to log in and out as they please during the year.
Thursday 17th/ September/2014
In the Unit of Inquiry today the children were talking about the different conflicts that may confront them on a daily basis in their homes and schools. We discussed possible resolutions to these conflicts. The children then enacted these situations showing both good and bad resolutions. Photos of these role plays can be seen in the gallery.
There will be a spellings test tomorrow as well as a math test, which will focus on sums with 10, for example 10 + 3 = , 4 + 10 =

Sunday 21st September
Reading folders went home today so make sure to read every night for 20 minutes. The children can return them on Tuesday and I will change the books.
There is swimming tomorrow for the boys and PE for the girls so please remember to dress the children appropriately.
I would also like to remind you about the healthy eating policy in the school. Children are encouraged to choose healthy options. Candy, cakes and chocolate are not allowed.
We are still learning about our community and the different members in our community. We would love if parents would volunteer to come in and chat to the children about their jobs. If interested, please let me know.
